New Transparency DVD Release

Hi all,

I heard there might be a new Transparency release coming soon so I emailed Michael this morning.  His reply really knocked my socks off!  He has a new DVD offering that he promises will be new to most everyone.  Here are some notes from the Transparency 0318 DVD "Sun Ra - Jazz Session" sleeve:

This black and white portrait of the Arkestra is startlingly beautiful and is possibly the single finest film of the band ever.  This surpasses even Space Is The Place in its details of how this tribe conjures the purest magic of costumes, percussion, and joyous science fiction truth.

Captured during a momentary stop in France (1/8/72) on their way back to Oakland after the Autumn/Winter 1971 European and Cairo, Egypt tours, this flawless video recording has never been seen by even the most hard core Sun Ra collectors and discographers.

Produced and Directed by Bernard Lion

01. Somebody Else's World
02. Watusi
03. Discipline
04. Synth

He also mentioned that within the next couple of months he will be shipping a new CD, "Sun Ra at 'The Red Garter' NYC 1970."

Pret-ty exciting, eh?

Did he happen to mention when "The Earliest Sun Ra" would be ready to ship? I pre-ordered that one over a year ago.

fhqwhgads, you should email him.

Michael told me that he has a special offer for those who pre-ordered 'The Earliest' now that the collection is so much larger than originally planned (14 discs now).  He didn't say anything specific but it seemed/sounded like it might be some time before the big collection is ready to go to pressing and ship.

Brother Cleve, I believe that the DVD is ready to ship now.  He said that 'the Red Garter' would be shipping in a couple of months.

You can email him through Myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/michael_transparency

If you need an alternate email, send me a note off-list and I'll give you the email address I use to reach Michael.  For all I know, it's the same he uses for everyone... I just want to respect his privacy by not publishing it over a public list.

Seems an awfully hard way to contact this character. In order to send an email, I have to join this MySpace page.
Doesn't he have a "normal" web site or at least an alternate way of communication.
Or am I just too much of a Luddite and/or technological midget?

i hate to say this, lennibukowski, but you are just a 21st century
kind of person who is used to, wants, uses, and expects AT LEAST 21st
century technology comms access. i dislike (and i am being nice with
words) that kind of 'stuff' (nice words, use only nice words).
someone sends you a facebook link to see some pics and you have to
join facebook to see them? sheesh! or you have to join myspace just
to send an email? i mean, really, how hard is it to set up a gmail
account for emails? and make that available easily? google offers
free web pages, blogs, email, etc. sun ra would surely be miffed if
he heard about this!

Guess I've been told.
Back I'll crawl under my rock and continue to use pen and paper in face of this "brave new world."

we are way behind here.

:-) :-) :-)

i can tell from your posts that you are probably a next-next-gen e-pen
and i-paper. i understand that with those, you just grab an i-pen out
of the air and start writing on any e-paper and it all works and
everything? it must be nice - no more phones, netbooks, etc to carry
around... :-)

its one of the reasons I dislike email (and much prefer to speak to people)
as I can
never get across the smirk, raised eyebrow, light sarcasm etc etc that is
often
required.

i was impressed by the haiku quality of many of his poems, at least
the ones on that site. very evocative imagery.

Surprised that a lot of you didn't know this.
I was hipped to it back in the early 60's.
Sort of carried it around with me and tried to live it, not always successfully.

Ah! That explains it! I was getting puzzled as you two seemed to be arguing
about something you agreed about. So do I; no way I'll be joining Facebook
or MySpace or anything similar (despite earning my living as an IT person).
It's difficult to be ironic by email, I upset someone very badly once
because I could hear what I meant but the recipient couldn't. Just a matter
of being on the right road, but going in the wrong direction!
