Sistas' Place/TC III with M. Persiani, C. Lundy, L. Nash/ Tonight! Feb 12th@9 and 10:30

Sistas' Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue at Jefferson Avenue (where Jazz:  A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is a Weapon), continues its 16th Season with vocalist TC the III in a special presentation, "Songs My Mother Liked Me To Sing," featuring pianist Marcus Persiani, bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Lewis Nash Saturday, February 12th@9 and 10:30pm.

TC the III has put together this powerful rhythm section to celebrate his mother, the late Trudy Pitts (1932- December 19, 2010). Now an ancestor and an important part of African American History, Trudy Pitts was well known for her groove tinged work on the Hammond B3 organ and for working with such greats as Ben Webster, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt. Her husband of some 50 years, the drummer William Theodore Carney aka Mr "C" (TC's father), often worked with her. This is the second installment of our African American History Month Tribute.

Sistas' Place/The Robert Rutledge Quintet/A Tribute to Freddie H

Sistas' Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue at Jefferson Avenue (where Jazz:  A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon), continues its 16th Season with a Tribute to Freddie Hubbard featuring trumpeter Robert Rutledge's Quintet with Stacy Dilliard on saxophone, pianist-TBA, bassist Michael Max Fleming and drummer Joe Black, Saturday, May 28th@9 and 10:30pm.

There is no question that Freddie Hubbard was one of the great trumpeters/composers/bandleaders of the 20th century. There is also no question about his strong relationship to Brooklyn during the 1960s and into the early 70s. Trumpeter Robert Rutledge knew, respected and studied the music and playing of Freddie Hubbard, so that his Tribute to this Master will assuredly be one of musical excellence.  Robert has assembled a fine team of players including Stacey Dillard on tenor and  Michael Max Fleming on bass.

Don't miss this last concert in the series!

Sistas' Place/Akua Dixon's Quartette Indigo/Tribute to Harriet T

Sistas' Place, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and (Culture is a Weapon), continues its 17th season with cellist, composer-aranger  Akua Dixon with her Quartette Indigo  featuring violinist Chala Yancy, violinist Patrisa Tomassini and Ina Paris on viola, also featuring the poetry of Betty Neal.

This, the first installment of  Women's History Month Celebrations, pays Tribute to Freedom Fighter Harriet Tubman on her Arrival Day, Saturday, March 10th @ 9 and 10:30pm.

The combination of paying Tribute to Harriet Tubman with Akua Dixon's Quartette Indigo and Betty Neal is a brilliant marriage. Ms Tubman epitomizes the courage and bravery that has been the hallmark of the women leaders in our culture. Akua Dixon has much of that same life force and has chosen this occasion to relaunch her innovative string quartet known as Quartette Indigo. Betty Neal is a pioneering poet known, by those who know the history of this music, as presenting her poem
Theme for the Eulipions with the Great Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
