Question about "The Paris Tapes"
Question about "The Paris Tapes"
I have a question about the new Kindred Spirits/Art Yard release "The
Paris Tapes." This is an amazing set, with wonderful sound and one of
Ra's greatest (and that's saying a lot) synthesizer solo pieces ever.
It's also got an unidentified composition I've never heard anywhere
else, possibly a Discipline piece, that's grooving and beautiful, with a
fantastic baritone sax duet. This release is greatly expanded and much
improved over the spotty, rawly recorded (off the radio?) extract from
this show that has circulated for a while.
My question is: the older version has two pieces that were not included
on the new release: "Enlightenment" (3:08) and an unidentified title,
probably another Discipline piece (3:56). Does anybody know if there
was a particular reason why these were left off the new release? It's a
shame they were not included, particularly in the case of the
unidentified piece, which is an other unique composition not appearing
anywhere else, to the best of my knowledge.
Saturnally,
Sam

Question about "The Paris Tapes"
Maybe an inquiry to Peter at artyardinfo@gmail.com can produce the answer to
your question, Sam.

Update on "The Paris Tapes"
Thanks, Margaret, for the suggestion. I did contact Art yard, and got a very nice response from Peter Dennett, who told me that there was about 50 minutes of material not used in the project, primarily due to various issues with the sound quality. Evidently Peter had to do some heroic editing on this stuff, and it shows--the editing and mastering on "The Paris Tapes" is excellent.

Update on "The Paris Tapes"
On one hand, it would be nice to hear the whole thing. On the other, pretty much every Saturn live LP was an excerpt from a concert, and masterfully edited by Sunny. So it just carries on the tradition I suppose.
"Your brain is simply wired to a nostalgic sense of audio distortion. You hear warmth, you think you hear grandeur, space, subtlety, all these things . . . but actually you're just satisfying an old recording in your brain." -Daniel Richler on vinyl.
