Jazz Vocalist Jeanne Lee Suffering from Colon Cancer Antwerp, Belgium -- Donations are currently being solicited to fund the medical treatment of avant-garde/free jazz vocalist Jeanne Lee.=A0 Lee, 61, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in the Spring and has been receiving treatment following surgery to remove the cancerous cells.=A0 An intravenous treatment to block post-surgery mestastis has been successful, but her doctor has requested new treatment begin immediately at a special clinic in Mexico.=A0 Although she has been teaching at two conservatories in Europe since 1996, Lee has been refused by both health plans and is currently uninsured.

Sparsely recorded and under-appreciated in America, Lee has worked with the biggest names of avant-garde/free jazz as one of the genre's only vocalists.=A0 >From her recording debut with pianist Ran Blake on 1961's "Legendary Duets" on the Bluebird label, Lee went on to work with Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, and Gunter Hampel later that decade=A0 The 1970's saw her working with Cecil Taylor, Marion Brown, Anthony Braxton, and Andrew Cyrille.=A0 More recently she has performed with Peter Kowald and the Reggie Workman Ensemble, while also focusing on her own composing and continuing to teach.=A0 Lee holds a Master's Degree in Education from New York University.
