Hi, Sean! The group you're referring to with Fred Anderson, Marshall Allen, Henry Grimes, and Avreeayl Ra is Henry Grimes's group called Spaceship on the Highway (or overseas, Spaceship on the Runway), with concerts that started in Chicago, as follows:

November 14th, 'O6: Henry Grimes's Spaceship on the Highway, w/ Fred Anderson, Marshall Allen, and Avreeayl Ra, Jazzclub Fasching, Stockholm, Sweden;

November 15th, 'O6: Henry Grimes's Spaceship on the Highway, w/ Fred Anderson, Marshall Allen, and Avreeayl Ra, Club Crescendo, Norrkoping, Sweden;

Tours such as this one helped Fred very much financially, but he first became ill in 2OO7, and his doctors advised him to stop traveling.

Avreeayl Ra is another Sun Ra connection, having himself played with Sun Ra. Also, as Avreeayl explained it to me, Avreeayl's father was Swinglee O'Neil, a tenor saxophonist & mentor to many young Chicago musicians, including John Gilmore. Swinglee O'Neil played in one of Sun Ra's early Chicago bands, and Sun Ra played in one of Swinglee's groups as well. And Avreeayl has probably played hundreds of concerts with Fred Anderson at Fred's Velvet Lounge in Chicago and elsewhere.

Fred Anderson is a prophet in the music, and something very close to a saint. And I'm still using the present tense for him. May he be forever revered, honored, listened to, and loved -- even though, when asked recently how he wanted to be remembered, he said something to the effect that he was a man who ate a lot of broccoli, and that it wouldn't be bad if somebody listened to a recording or two of his every now and then.

Sun Ra connections: Fred played a few shows with Marshall Allen a few years back (also with Henry Grimes and Avreeal Ra) that truly deserve release. I know they were recorded.

John Gilmore got Fred his first gigs as a leader in the early 60's when he asked Fred to take over a standing gig Gilmore had while the Arkestra went to Montreal.
