I bought this when it came out, and yes, I know what you mean, it just doesn't stand the test of time. I understand Phil Alvin was a skilled interpreter of the real big band belters like James Rushing (sp?) and his voice is good, all the musicianship is good, its just lacking any real fire to it, it sounds, well, kind of flat.

My guess is that it was recorded in multitrack in a 'dead' studio and then post-production enhanced trying to make it sound 'interesting', almost certainly the very best most efficient way to make even the tidiest talent lack all essential fire. As the sort of record a musician might buy to steal technique, by all means I highly recommend the disk, every track has gems of giggle-worthy cleverness deployed with the precision of a silicon chip die stamp, but, as with many truly great musicians unknown in the units-sold world of plastic sound shadows, if you want to hear some real Phil Alvin music, its my further guess that you'd have to track him down and hear him in living live sound-o-rama.

i was not disappointed - great arrangements by sun ra, the arkestra is right on and extremely tight, the vocals are nice and clean. both songs sounded nice and fresh, no out-'ho-de-ho'ing, but no hiding either. 'brother can you spare a dime' - well, it was a little too real. even though this performance is almost 25 years old, and the song itself is way older, the clarity and the diction of the words here and the no nonsense arrangement just made it seem too applicable to today. on all three of these, there is that little bit of 'sun ra', the same way there is a little bit of 'sun ra' in 'elephants on parade' - just enough to make you think about the music, that there is something going on, but you're not quite sure what. oddly, the rest of the album does not do much for me - those other songs do seem a little too much?
