... who was the most socially conscious musician ...

Dear Saturnites,

I always think any survey about "the most" [fill in the blank] "musician of the last" [fill in the blank] years has got to be pretty silly. Still, I would certainly have to put Fela Anipulako~Kuti way up there as one of 'em. When I think about it, I hardly know any great musicians who aren't pretty socially conscious in the sense of caring about justice & equality & all the other issues of human life. I think that's much of what drives them.

At any rate, if we're interested in this survey, shouldn't our responses be going into the poll as well, if not instead of to the Saturn list?

there is a vote at http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101020304/index.html# "who was the most socially conscious musician of the past 100 years?" There is also an option to give one's own choice: daily@timeinc.net . [etc.]

If the question is socially conscious it would be hard not to say Archie Shepp... [etc.]
