I thought that its release would stimulate much more discussion, not simply because of its rarity but because, as Dan Plonsey points out in his "Other Planes of There" review, "Next Stop Mars", in particular, is part of a very short list of extended studio works that feature what he calls "structured" or "conducted" improvisation. It seems to me that folks generally sleep on "Cosmic Chaos" and "Next Stop Mars" in this regard.

In this new batch of Evidence reissues, we've got both "Next Stop Mars" - which is all you say it is - and "Sunrise in the Western Sky" (Crystal Spears), which features an extended John Gilmore solo and which also has its place in that series of longer, structured improvised works by Sun Ra, although not directly comparable to these astonishing 1960s pieces.

We're still missing two key albums from the reissue series, from this perspective: Secrets of the Sun ("Reflects Motion"), and Continuation ("Jupiter Festival").

I am already on record as having a decidedly different view from rlc on the recording date for this record. Ben Opie's comment about a residual boppishness and the "transitional" nature of the date took me quite by surprise.

I'd agree somewhat with Ben here: there are links to the musical past on this album, which are absent from "The Magic City" or "Heliocentric Worlds II". The overall structure of "The Idea Of It All" is much less radical than the superlative Gilmore solo it contains. It doesn't follow, however, that an outside-sounding track has to be a later performance than a more conventional piece, in the Sun Ra canon, so maybe "transitional" is more of a stylistic than a chronological mapping. "The Idea Of It All", like "Dancing Shadows", has a boppish theme as far as I am concerned.
