Back when he was still Bill Evans, Yusef Lateef played with Sonny Blount. In fact, he was also a member of the Dukes of Swing (that was no small-time outfit). You can hear him doing the gutbucket thing on "Pork'n'Beans." (The other tenor player, Melvin Scott, was more overtly into Lester Young at that time.) Lateef and Blount also worked together on another gig in 1949.
I don't know if Ronnie Boykins knew Ernie Farrow, but I suspect Sunny and Arkestrans were paying attention to Yusef's early recordings under his own name. That 1957 session for Savoy was recorded shortly before Ronnie joined Sunny, you know.
