Hi again,

This post concerns Walter Dunn, whose two singles on Repeto were not =

re-issued on the Singles 2CD set. My involvement with these records started with Gilbert Hsiao, who = reported to me and a couple others that Michael Anderson, briefly an = Arkestra member, heard these records and swore that the piano player was = Sunny and the tenor sax man was Gilmore. Gilbert kindly sent me a dub of = the Dunn sides along with the dub of the Sociophonic disc. After several listens I concluded that the piano could be Ra, the = tenor probably isn't Gilmore, but could be, that the vocal group was = independent of the band, and that the recordings must have been made in = the late 50's because they would have been too old-fashioned by 1962 or = 63. So much for my knowledge of music fashions. Based on copyright = research I did yesterday, it seems most likely that Robert Campbell was = pretty correct in his '63 guess. I'd put it closer to October of 1962, but = almost certainly after Ra and company left Chicago.

 here are several copyright deposits by Dunn, 14 from 1961 to 1965. Of =

the 4 released sides, only "I'll Close my Heart" isn't there. Astericks = are by the released items.

Dunn lived in Evanston, Illinois during these years, in 1961 with Champion = at 1129 Elmwood, then at 1620 Darrow St. Champion wrote one other song in = 1967. Ted Ashford is, I think, Theodore Harold Askounes Ashford of = Evanston and Chicago. Ashford, besides writing several songs, also wrote = two or three music theory instruction books. He got a PhD in Music = Education around 1965. His father (of the same name w/o Harold), I think, = wrote "From Atoms to Stars: An Introduction to the Physical Sciences." = Inner circle members?

I also looked up the name "Satanas" which Abraham uses as his composition = credit on the record of "Christina." Nothing but a book by that title, = published in late 1963 and written by Rama L. (Rama L. Edwards) and J. = Uschmann (Joan Uschmann Rodriguez) of El Paso, Texas. Can't find it in the = LC collection, but I doubt any connection. Abraham using a name like = Satanas isn't that strange really.

As for conclusions, I think now that it would be hard to prove that the = records were made before 1962 (probably around Sep. or Oct. '62), and that = if Ra and/or Gilmore played, they would have had to travel back to = Chicago. Not out of the question, especially if they wanted to pick up = some things left behind or consult w/Abraham, but there needs to be some = witness to this. I don't suppose Dunn is still alive. Who knows?
