I was working on a copyright project about Gigi Gryce for a non-lister, looking up the actual copyright paperwork for some compostions when I ran across, almost by accident, the copyright registration for "Swing a Little Taste" by Julian Priester, right before the Jazz by Sun Ra copyrights. The title is actually "Let'(s) Swing a Little Taste" and Le Sony'r Ra is named as the contact person. I'll be ordering that soon. I looked up the two 1954 pieces. On the form in use then there was a line for pseudonym and year of birth. Herman Blount is the pseudonym listed and 1914 is the year of birth. Is this perhaps the only admission\confirmation of the birth date by Sun Ra while he was called Sun Ra? The later forms do not have this info. Seems he was not as disconnected from his past identity in the early years as he was in his later. I also looked up the one piece that was listed as Not On Shelf, "Prevues of Tomorrow" from 1957. Its sub-title, not written on the copyright file card, is "A Suite of Translated Thought". Damn. I'm going to try again for that one. Perhaps some of the Jazz by Sun Ra mystery pieces are in it. I'm also going to look up more sidemen compositions by folks such as Priester, Boykins, Allen, even Gilmore, and others. It looks like there will be a second set of music now. I've been keeping everybody's name and address, so I don't think anyone will be left out. I'll write more about all this when I know more. James W.
