Followers of Specials mainman Jerry Dammers are directed to the Dartington Hall, Totnes on April 27, when his new ensemble will play as part of the South West Sound 2007 music conference. "Twelve years ago I was DJ'ing the funkier side of Sun Ra," Dammets told MOJO, "and had a band that did some Sun Ra covers. Recently I was offered a free hand in an 'outer space' art event at the Roundhouse, so I put together and directed a Sun Ra tribute band, under the working title Cosmic Engineers. I was overwhelmed by the contribution of some of the country's best jazz musicians and by the response of the audience, so we are going to do it again, this time including a couple of tunes from other mystic mavericks. This is an occasional project with a floating line-up and is a heartfelt tribute to Sun Ra, who to this day proves that true psychedlic creativity has nothing to do with either taking drugs, or being young."
