The few pieces submitted in 1970 and 1972 seem to reflect the changing attitude of Sun Ra towards copyright. While he submitted scores of 60's masterpieces which hardly anyone heard, as he gained more popularity and exposure, he submitted fewer scores. Those he did submit were of pieces which were being recorded or released by major-labels such as Blue Thumb and Impulse. 1970 was the last year of submissions for Saturn recorded pieces, with one exception. The Sun Myth (3p.) was submitted, oddly enough, on January 21, 1970, long after it had been recorded and that recording distributed more than any other Sun Ra record to that date, excepting perhaps the Savoy record. Why did he wait, and after waiting, why did he submit only that piece? Was there a threat of someone ripping the song off? I don't know. The piece as written is a single line of music divided into six themes. The only instrument specifications are Piano\tpt.\alto in one blank measure, and a section for clavioline. I would guess that, like the earlier scores, this music was either the original manuscript or a hand copy of part of it done for copyright purposes. On October 8, 1970, Walkin' on the Moon and Somebody Else's World were copyrighted. These, unlike most of the sixties items, were submitted sometime near their recording date. They have the melodies and the words, typed. Bare bones sketches of the tunes. I would guess that these were submitted only because they were the most likely to be "hits" of the period. On October 8, 1998, they enter the public domain. In 1972, all the pieces were copyrighted which would end up on Space is the Place except Images which had already been submitted. Space is the Place arrived on June 22. I have not seen it yet. Discipline 33 arrived December 1. It's a single page, bass and treble lines, 16 measures. Sea of Sounds (3p.) and East Three (1p.) arrived December 5. Both have cover pages.Both have simple bass and treble lines. Not much else to say about them. Next, and last, the Impulse copyrights.
