A really great book about Chicago in the 1950s

I want to recommend a book that is indispensable if you want to know more about the Chicago scene that Sunny was once part of.

Robert Pruter's book Doowop: The Chicago Scene (University of Illinois Press, 1996), will tell you all about Chance and Vee Jay and Chess and United--even Ping Records and Tommy "Mad Man" Jones' ill-fated Mad and M and M logos. And it will tell you all about the Club DeLisa, the Flame Lounge, McKie's Disc Jockey Lounge, and other key nightlife establishments of the period. Not to mention the big-time disc jockeys of the day. Red Saunders is discussed briefly, as is the one vocal group that recorded with Red, the Hambone Kids. (And here I thought the kids were tap dancing--that's not what the hambone is, at all.)

The only thing that's missing, ironically, is Sun Ra. Add Bob's notes for The Singles, and you've taken care of that omission (Sunny's groups were so completely obscure that Pruter's sources, many of them retired doowoppers, didn't know about them.) The book does have pictures of the Magnificents, the Four Buddies, and Faith Taylor and the Sweet Teens, all of whom rehearsed with Sun Ra or were backed by the Arkestra in clubs.

Bob has another excellent book, Chicago Soul, which picks up in the late 1950s, and which the same publisher put out in 1992. Both can be had in paperback, from good old amazon.com.

Mike Rowe did Chicago Blues back in 1972. Now all we need is a book on Chicago Jazz. No one has written one for the 40s and 50s. Armin?
