Unknown Arkestra Concert?

Having just picked up a copy of the new RCA/Bluebird 2 CD set "The complete RCA Victor recordings of Dizzy Gillespie" I pulled down Barry McRae's biographical sketch of Diz (Dizzy Gillespie : his life & times NY: Universe Books, 1988) to check what McRae had to say about a few of the cuts. As I always do when I have a jazz book in my hands, I checked the index for entries on Monk and Sun Ra, and was surprised to uncover the following passage (page 114):

"The important thing was that it helped to keep the Gillespie spirits buoyant. No challenge was too much, and he was more than comfortable to accept George Wein's invitation to share a night at the 1984 Kool Festival with Sun Ra. Kenny Clarke happened to be in New York at the time, and there was inevitably some speculation as to whether he might appear. In the event, he did not and, perhaps because Gillespie's group featured both the swing style of Benny Carter and the bop of J.J. Johnson, the drummer used was Louis Bellson.

"Present at the concert, this writer was initially surprised to discover that the spectacular Arkestra had been billed to occupy the first half of the programme. It actually turned out to be a wise decision. Sun Ra led his 'space walks', introduced the dances and indulged in all of his intergalactic mumbo-jumbo, but it was Gillespie who by the end of the evening had the blase New Yorkers in a mild state of shock."

This is a surprising passage for a few reasons, the main one being that McRae appears, to me, to be putting down Sun Ra. McRae wrote one of the first books on free jazz (The jazz cataclysm) and was the strongest advocate of it in the pages of Jazz journal through-out the Sixties.

The other surprise was when I could find no entry in Robert Campbell's magnificent EARTHLY RECORDINGS... for this gig. Does anyone know anything else about it? Are there concert tapes extant (Did I completely miss the entry whilst frantically searching?!?)
