Vladimir Simosko has stated several times that Ra's music declined rapidly after the early 1980's. Most albums released after that point are really appalling compared with his earlier works. The last half-dozen or so are, in Simosko's opinion, not even worth listening to and he rarely discusses them in his jazz survey courses unless it's to prove this point. Anyone who actually has gone through Simosko's jazz history courses can easily see why this is so.

The question of covers is partly due to Sonny's slowdown in writing, but also possibly because he had already reached his peak in originality and creativity and had trouble coming up with new ideas. Simosko had seen him in the 70's and there was simply no comparison with reagrd to the sets the band was doing in the late 80's.
