Several questions
Greetings,
Since many of you are more knowledgeable in Sun Ra matters than I am, I
wanted to ask a few questions...
#1: I remember asking the list several years ago about the Evidence CD
issue of Jazz in Silhouette -- specifically, the pseudo-stereo utilized
on it. One list member responded that their 50s pressing was true mono.
This led me to assume that perhaps the pseudo-stereo master was created
by Ed Michel during Saturn's brief distribution period through
Impulse...but then I noticed, upon re-listening to Holiday for Soul
Dance and Bad & Beautiful the other day, that these albums also featured
similar pseudo-stereo processing. Do the Saturn issues of these two
albums have this processing as well? Was Holiday for Soul Dance ever
considered as part of the Impulse reissue campaign (Ed Michel's
now-defunct web site does not list Holiday as part of the Impulse
reissue campaign, but by the same token, it lists Pathways as never
being released by Impulse when it was)? Did somebody in the Sun Ra camp
(perhaps Alton Abraham) perhaps prepare these pseudo-stereo masters? Do
the original mono (or for that matter, two-track session reels) tapes
even exist for these albums? I also noticed that there was a European
reissue of Jazz in Silhouette on CD using the Impulse cover art...does
this contain the same pseudo-stereo processing as the Evidence CD?
(as a side note, I once spent an afternoon creating my own remix of
Enlightenment and a couple of other tracks in order to give them a more
'natural' sound field. It makes me think that, if the two-track
recordings do still exist, some really nice reissues could be created
with the remixes issued alongside the original mono mixes)
#2: Apparently, Atavistic was preparing a reissue of Continuation a
couple of years ago, which (from what I understand) was initially pushed
back because new session material was found. Does anyone know if
Atavistic still plans to reissue this album, especially as it is one of
the few remaining 60s releases that has yet to make it to CD?
#3: For that matter...does anyone know if A Blue One/Orbitation in Blue
will ever make it to CD? I had a digital copy of this from several years
ago (unfortunately lost now), and it really is a great recording. I wish
I still had a copy of it.

And third, "A Blue One/Orbitration in Blue" may see a cd issue when the eventual sequel to The Eternal Myth comes out, but other than that, I don't see it coming out. Not sure if a master has been found, but there are some needledrops floating around. If they didn't reissue it on Secrets of The Sun, which would have made the most sense, then I don't know what it would fit with.
