tapestry from an asteroid lyrics?
Hi ihor,
This is what I hear after listening to a couple of different versions:
They say that you are a pleasant sort
when you get vibrations from an asteroid
Tapestry from an asteroid to court
makes you life fill with space joy
They say that you find you gain insight
and all appears to be starlight
You find when you are an asterisk
you point to greater heights
The spaceways are not so far
when vibrations hit your heart
Your world becomes a star
no matter who you are
They say that you are a pleasant sort
when you get vibrations from an asteroid
Tapestry from an asteroid to court
makes you life fill with space joy

Are there any official recordings
that have "Tapestry from an Asteroid" on them other than We
Travel the Spaceways and Futuristic Sounds? It is one of my
favorite compositions by Sun Ra and I'm especially interested in
seeing how the arrangement changed for it over the years.

Knoel - Thanks for the corrections. I just listened to Ahmed Abdullah's version on his album 'Tara's Song' and the lyrics match your notes. It's been nice seeing your name pop up here lately - thanks for speaking up!
Kevin - those are the only two versions I see as 'official releases,' though Campbell/Trent list a total of 48 entries.

there's also a 1960 rehearsal take on "music from tomorrow's world" from a few years back on atavistic

with that, here is how i hear it, based on the 11-24-79 "Spaceships at
Soundscape" (d1t02 11:32 - 13:12) version. i wrote it as june tyson
sings it, with the slight pauses and breaths.
i am not sure what it feels like to be 'an asterisk'! :-) but it is
a pretty cool phrase, and i assume it has something to do with being /
catching an asteroid.

well I have always thorugh it was asterix or asterisk as well, only it seems an odd term, although no more bent poetically than any other lyric ;) so I'd accept asterisk, but I'd want to be sure if that's at all possible.

Actually in the context of Sun Ra's lyrical meta-physical understanding it makes quite a lot of sense when think of an asterisk (*) as being a small asteroid, a baby star. Therefore: "You'll find, when you are an asterisk that you'll climb to greater heights."

after several re-listens of that performance, it seems that june tyson
sings 'asteris', i.e., she does not sing the last letter of the word,
at least not very clearly or audibly enough to have been picked up by
any of the mics that were recording her voice. on that particular
recording, most of the first line of the song is not very audible
either, hence my original query.
i do like AA's take on the word being 'asterisk'. some online dictionary says:
> Origin: 1350–1400; Middle English
thanks, AA!

The Latin/Greek roots etimology pretty much clinches it on asterisk, and if you fold in Knoel's observation of the further equation on astro-risk I think we have a pretty good case
