What happens when avant garde art meets ‘intergalactic’ jazz? On June 10, you can find out when Sun Ra Arkestra appears at MONA.

Sun Ra Arkestra has been playing ‘intergalactic’ jazz since the mid-1950s. The band was founded in Chicago by composer, keyboard innovator and visionary Sun Ra. Ra had developed a complex persona using ‘cosmic’ philosophies and lyrical poetry that made him a pioneer of Afrofuturism, a combination of science fiction, magic realism, Afrocentricity, historical fiction and non-western cosmologies to address Afro-American concerns, and is represented in the works of such artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat (we have one!) and hip hop musician D. J. Spooky. 

Sun Ra died in 1993, and the band continued under the leadership of longtime member Marshall Allen. 

The Arkestra is a flamboyant, costumed, multi-instrumental, theatrical, audience participatory, run-down of jazz from the early days of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson through to the most advanced jams of the space age. The Arkestra has been one of the most celebrated and controversial bands in the jazz avant-garde for five decades. At MONA, Allen is joined by nine other musicians including such longtime Arkestra stalwarts as Michael Ray and Danny Thompson. 

Lee Konitz, another iconic player is also on the bill, playing with his quartet. He is one of the most individual of all alto saxophonists in the history of jazz. His cool sound and systematic approach have influenced many generations. He came to the attention of jazz cognoscenti while studying and playing with Lennie Tristano. In 1949, they recorded the first two free improvisations ever documented. Konitz also appeared on Miles Davis' groundbreaking recording ‘Birth of the Cool’ (1948- 1950). 
Since the early '60s Konitz has appeared primarily as a leader. His recordings have ranged from cool bop to thoughtful free improvisations. Konitz has been quite prolific, recording and performing with Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Elvin Jones and others. 

The Sun Ra Arkestra is a joint production with MONA and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
