sun ra at slugs 1967

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Back to the past: I would go on occasion with buddies on bikes to
Slugs late evenings and hear Sun Ra in full space / Egyptian Pharonic
dress. I was there in the late 60s.

I "immigrated" to NYC in 1967 from Oklahoma and my jumping off place,
Kansas City, MO, in order to join a Wall Street law firm, but really
to get rid of what I thought to be my overly restricted and
conservative background. Another bachelor in my building told me that
a small group of men in their late 20s and early 30s would once a week
join up on bicycles and go downtown to either Slugs or a men only
Irish bar. I bought a racing bike and started going with them. That
is when I saw Sun Ra at Slugs every two or three weeks. It was Sun
Ra's approach that pulled me out of my conservative sense of what was
and wasn't music - I saw San Ra as music iconoclast. Whatever you
thought 1960s jazz or orchestra music was or should be - he turned
upside down and shook to pieces. I agree with the Village Voice
reviewer that Sun Ra's approach was primitive pagan religious. I
never looked back. It took multiple visits to Slug's for Sun Ra's
music to become clear, even normal to my ears. The thing is that
after him, I have been able to enjoy and appreciate very
unconventional music by most people's standards but which is
understandable and thoughtful and enjoyable by my standards and way of
thinking (which drives Marlene absolutely mad and behind two tiers of
closed doors). What Sun Ra did for me was to open me up to all human
expressions in musical sound as a form of communication - not just an
exercise in harmony. His music combined with his eclectic approach
combining science fiction and ancient Egyptian symbols and religion
got to me and opened up my mind. as I was and still am a sci fi and
ancient history buff. For that I am very grateful.
